FAI Paul Tissandier Diploma
The award, named for the Secretary General of FAI from 1919 to 1945, is awarded to those who made made significant contributions to aviation over an extended period.
Walter J. Boyne: for nearly 40 years of significant contributions to aviation, as a pilot, historian, author and consultant.
Mr. Boyne began his aviation career in the U.S. Air Force, where he served for 23 years, and accumulated more than 5,000 hours flying time in various aircraft. In 1974 he joined the National Air & Space Museum--the world's most visited museum--and became Director in 1981. He has written hundreds of aviation articles and 28 books on American aviation. Most recently, he is credited with the founding and successful launch of Wingspan Air & Space Channel, the first 24 hour television channel devoted exclusively to aviation and aerospace programming.
